A puncture rarely happens at a convenient moment. It is usually halfway to work, at the far end of a towpath, or just as a family ride is getting going. Knowing how to fix bike puncture problems properly means more than swapping a tube and hoping for the best. Find what caused it, inspect the tyre, and you are far less likely to stop again a mile down the road.
Before you fix the puncture, make the bike safe
Move yourself and the bike away from traffic before starting. Shift the bike into a stable position, ideally upside down on the saddle and handlebars or supported in a stand. If you have an e-bike, switch the system off first and remove the battery if it is easy to do so. A heavier wheel and motor cable can make the job more awkward, so take your time rather than forcing anything.
Check whether the tyre is genuinely punctured. A tyre that feels soft may simply need air, but a tyre that has lost pressure quickly, has a nail in the tread, or hisses when squeezed needs attention. Do not ride a fully flat tyre to the nearest shop. It can damage the tyre sidewall, pinch the tube further, and even harm the rim.
For a standard tube-type wheel, you will need tyre levers, a pump or CO2 inflator, a spare inner tube or puncture repair kit, and ideally a small multi-tool. A pair of gloves and a rag are useful if the chain or wheel is dirty. For a tubeless set-up, carry tubeless plugs, sealant and a suitable inflator, plus a spare tube as a back-up.
How to fix bike puncture step by step
Remove the wheel without creating a bigger job
For the front wheel, open the quick-release lever or loosen the axle nuts. If your bike has a thru-axle, undo and slide it out while keeping hold of the wheel. On a rim-brake bike, you may need to release the brake cable so the inflated tyre can pass between the brake blocks later.
Rear wheels take a little more care. Shift into the smallest rear sprocket before removing the wheel, which gives the derailleur more room. Lift the chain clear as the wheel comes out. With a hub-geared bike or an e-bike with a rear hub motor, there may be cables, axle washers and torque arms to manage. Take a quick photo before undoing anything, especially if you are repairing it at the roadside.
Let out any remaining air by pressing the valve core or opening the valve. Push both sides of the tyre into the centre channel of the rim, then use a tyre lever to lift one bead over the rim edge. Once a short section is free, work around the wheel by hand where possible. Too much force from tyre levers can pinch the tube or mark the rim.
Find the cause, not just the hole
Pull the old tube out, leaving the tyre in roughly the same orientation as the wheel. Inflate the tube slightly and listen for escaping air. If you cannot hear it, hold it close to your cheek or place it in water and look for bubbles. Mark the hole.
Now match the hole position to the tyre and rim. A hole on the outer side of the tube usually points to glass, thorn, wire or a sharp object still lodged in the tyre. Run your fingers carefully around the inside of the casing and inspect the tread from the outside. Do this slowly. Small shards of flint or glass can be almost invisible, and a sharp fragment left behind will puncture the replacement tube straight away.
A hole on the rim-facing side can indicate a damaged or displaced rim tape, an exposed spoke hole, or a burr around the valve opening. Two small cuts that look like a snake bite normally mean the tube was pinched against the rim after hitting a pothole or kerb at low pressure. In that case, fitting a new tube without checking your usual tyre pressure only treats half the problem.
Patch or replace the inner tube?
A spare tube is the fastest roadside answer. It gets you moving again and allows you to inspect and patch the damaged tube at home. If you are using a repair kit, roughen the area around the hole with the supplied abrasive, apply a thin layer of vulcanising solution, and wait until it feels tacky rather than wet. Press the patch firmly into place, then give it a minute to bond before lightly inflating the tube.
Self-adhesive patches are handy for an emergency, but a correctly fitted vulcanising patch is generally more dependable for regular use. Replace, rather than patch, a tube with a split valve base, a long tear, several old patches, or damage caused by the tyre coming off the rim. Tubes are inexpensive. Reliability is worth more than saving one tube that has reached the end of its useful life.
Refit the tube and tyre carefully
Add just enough air to the new or repaired tube to give it shape. Put the valve through the rim first, then tuck the tube evenly into the tyre. Starting opposite the valve, push the tyre bead back onto the rim with your thumbs. Finish at the valve area. If the final section feels excessively tight, push the tyre into the centre channel all the way around again rather than reaching straight for a lever.
Before inflating, check both sides of the wheel to make sure no section of tube is trapped under the tyre bead. Push the valve up into the tyre briefly, then pull it back out so it sits straight. Inflate gradually, checking that the tyre’s mould line is even around the rim. If it rises unevenly or bulges in one spot, release the air and reseat it.
Use the pressure range printed on the tyre sidewall as your starting point. The right figure depends on rider weight, tyre width, road surface and load. A commuter with loaded panniers needs more support than a solo rider on smooth lanes. Do not automatically inflate to the maximum marked pressure, particularly on wider tyres, where a little less can improve grip and comfort without increasing puncture risk.
Refit the wheel, secure the axle properly and reconnect the brake if you released it. Spin the wheel to confirm it turns freely, then operate both brakes before riding away. On an e-bike, check that every motor cable is routed safely and the wheel is fully seated before refitting the battery and switching the system on.
Reduce the chance of another puncture
Punctures are not always bad luck. Under-inflation, worn tyres and neglected debris are common causes. Make a quick tyre check part of your weekly routine, especially if you commute on roads with broken glass, hedge cuttings or building debris.
Look for flattened tread, cuts, cracks in the sidewalls and tiny embedded stones. A tyre with repeated punctures or a visible casing should be replaced, even if it still holds air. Puncture-resistant tyres add some weight and can feel firmer to fit, but they make real sense for year-round commuters and utility riders who value fewer interruptions. Lightweight performance tyres may roll quickly, yet they demand more attention and are less forgiving on poor surfaces.
Correct pressure matters just as much. Check it with a gauge rather than squeezing the tyre by hand, particularly on road bikes where small pressure changes are harder to judge. If you regularly suffer pinch punctures, try a modest increase in pressure within the tyre’s stated limit. If your rides are rough and traction is poor, a wider tyre at a sensible pressure may be a better long-term answer than simply pumping a narrow tyre rock hard.
Tubeless tyres can seal small holes automatically, but they are not maintenance-free. Sealant dries out, larger cuts may still need a plug, and seating a stubborn tyre can require a stronger blast of air. They suit many gravel, mountain and modern road riders, while a dependable tube-and-tyre set-up remains simple, affordable and easy to repair anywhere.
When a puncture needs workshop help
Bring the wheel in if the tyre bead will not seat, the rim tape is damaged, the rim is dented, spokes are loose, or you find a cut too large to trust. A recurring puncture in the same area is a clear sign that something has been missed. It is also sensible to get help with hub motors, internal gears and bikes with complex brake or axle hardware if you are not confident refitting them safely.
